The Black Brothers is a book written by a German writer and has been read and loved worldwide since its publication back in 1941. It is not a story that is happy and all good. The story follows Giorgio, a young Swiss farmer’s son that was sold off to work as a chimney sweep in Milan. The story revolves around his life living in poverty in Milan and the difficult work and struggles that came with being a vulnerable chimney sweeper working in rich families. The story does have a few heavy moments and themes that you might question whether or not it is age-appropriate, but it is necessary.

We cannot shelter our children from all of the harsh realities that exist in this world, and they need to see that. At the same time, apart from the heavy themes and undertones that follow the main plot, there are lots of moments of adventure, fun, and at times hope in the story as well. The story ends in Giorgio making his escape, getting the guy who bought him arrested, and then getting married and living a happy life where he is ultimately reunited with his family in his childhood home. So, The Black Brothers is a difficult story, but at the same time, it teaches a great lesson about perseverance and resilience till the end.
